How did you both meet?
As Joe loves telling everyone, "we met in the mud!"
The year was 2019. I decided to attend the Download festival with my sister and her friends. One of them so happened to be Joe and that is where I met him for the first time.
Who made the first move?
I would say he did when he sent me a message a week after Download saying that he owed me some sunblock. He also made sure to send a picture of himself all cleaned up wearing a suit :)
He would say that I did when I first held his hand to navigate the Download crowds.
What was your first date?
We went out for Lebanese food and accidentally ordered way too much. We spent hours there just talking and getting to know each other better. Then we had all the leftover food packed up to go and Joe gave me all the Baklava to take home.
The engagement story
We were in Malaysia. We had previously tried to visit but that was cancelled due to Covid. My parents organised a trip to Penang and Joe booked a nice restaurant for just the two of us to go to. The restaurant was on the top floor of a high rise with a balcony you could walk onto and it overlooked the sea and city. We had a lovely meal with exceptional service. Once we had finished eating, Joe took me out to the balcony. Some fireworks started going off and while I was watching them, Joe got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After a minute or two of a few too many stunned "really?s", I said yes.
But there was more going on behind the scenes. As a backup plan, Joe had let the hotel know what he planned to do and asked them to do something special. They needed time to do this, so he let them know and then, to give them more time, took me to a sake bar where he accidentally ordered a whole bottle of sake instead of just one glass.
When we got back to the hotel, we opened the door to find towels folded into swans, rose petals arranged to say "marry me?" and a bottle of wine with two glasses. It was all incredibly romantic.
